Basic Tire Inflation and Maintenance Saves Big Dollars Now, Not Later.

Posted by: David Kiley on August 1, 2008

I know I am a frequent basher of Fox News’s Sean Hannity. But it’s so easy to point out this nitwit’s stupidity and hubris.

Today, Hannity rants against Barack Obama for suggesting that tune-ups and proper tire inflation in cars will save consumers more money immediately than offshore drilling will a decade from now.

Hannity actually ridicules Obama and remarkably calls Obama a “liar.”

According to www.fueleconomy.gov, the gas savings of having a properly tuned car is 16 cents a gallon, compared with a car that’s not properly tuned. The savings from properly inflated tires versus improperly inflated tires baries, but the site says 1% of fuel economy is lost for every 2 psi the tires are underinflated.

As ana example, students at Carnegie Mellon University in 2005 studied cars on the campus. Checking air pressure of 81 cars, they found the tires of only one vehicle in 81 properly inflated. The others were under-inflated by an average of 20%. At the time, gas was $3.00 per gallon, so the students worked it out that drivers would save $432 per year based on typical driving.

Statistics vary, but more than half of the vehicles on the road today are believed, from periodic spot checking, to be under-inflated.

Hannity and others keep pressuring for more offshore oil drilling.
The U.S. government’s own Energy Information Administration says that removing restrictions on offshore drilling wouldn’t lead to any additional domestic oil production until 2017, and that even at its peak the extra production would have an “insignificant” impact on oil prices.

Hmmmmmmm. Hannity called Obama a “liar” for making the point that looking after tires and cars TODAY would yield more savings for most drivers than increasing offshore drilling. He even made a point of calling Obama a “liar” on his daily radio show. Yet…readily available statistics seem to be indicate the Democratic candidate is correct, and that Hannity is oh so wrong…as usual.

The evidence Hannity used to back up his point: Hannity said that after three, I believe he said, Cadillac Escalades, he can’t remember when the last time was that he opened the hood. He says that modern vehicles don’t even need to be tuned up. I suppose it’s true that some new vehicles don’t get tuned up in the traditional sense. But the U.S. car park is full of tens of millions of cars and trucks that do need tune-ups.

Of course, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich also called Obama’s “silly” and “factually untrue.”

And yet…the facts are easily obtainable.

Hannity said several times during the rant that he is “all for wind.”

I’ll say.

Yeah. I agree that we should keep our cars tuned and tires inflated but we still need to drill for more oil and nat. gas here in America. And no, Sean Hannity is not arrogant.
You and your liberal allies are. So there.

Yes, and all you need to do is keep a decent bicycle floor pump in the trunk of the car and you can top off your air every week or couple of weeks in about 3 minutes. You don't need to pay 75 cents at the service station.

(It takes about ten strokes of the pump to raise the PSI on my Honda Accord's tires by 1 PSI)

This argument is so typical of liberals. The argument is obviously correct, but to make it part of your energy policy is ludicrous. It is an emotional argument that will have no long term effect. While people may check their tires today, most will return to their forgetful indiffernce by tomorrow. Drilling for offshore oil is a certain way to increase the supply which in turn will decrease the price, a tenet of basic economics! A characteristic of most liberals is that they lack common sense.

From Kiley: Obama did not make it part of his energy policy. He made the point as a smart tip for consumers, and used it to make the point that it would save a lot of people as much or more than McCain's gas tax holiday.

Steve,

Instead of using a bicycle pump or paying 75 cents at a service station, you could go to places like Discount Tire, Belle Tire, or even Wal-Mart where they will check your air for free, regardless of where you bought the tire.

On a side note, Sean Hannity is arrogant. About as arrogant and ignorant as Anne Coulter and Ayane Hirsi.

RE: Mr. Kiley's retort to my earlier comment. Obama's suggestion was not in connection to McCain's gas tax holiday, rather to his position that more gas could be saved by keeping tires properly inflated than could be produced with offshore drilling.

When I first heard the Obama tire inflation comment and what it could save, I thought to myself, oh no...they are going to eat him alive for that one. As the day went on, I began to think about the "energy crises of the early 70's", when I was 22 years old. I remember the Nixon saying and others saying how important it was to keep your tires inflated, to save gas, recommending carpooling, speed limit went down to 55 mph on the Hwy. We had to turn the thermostats down to 68 degrees. You know what...it worked...the nation cut down on energy at a tremendous rate. Somebody needs to air the Republican president and others of that time and play it for American and to the High School Graduates like Hannity and Limbaugh.

I love hannity, you nitwit libs should listen more, maybe you could learn to think for yourself! Just the fact that you could consider Obama for president is a pretty scary fact. The guy is a strait up communist/terrorist just to name a few. Yeah, that is a good idea Obama by the way about the tires. Maybe you libs should consider the fact that every other country except ours is drilling like crazy, so why are we not drilling......hmmmn let's see it's the wacko environmentalists. Have any of you ever met these people. They are complete nut jobs. Sorry, don't mean to offend you!

Nowadays, people are hooked with payday loan. Even the adjustment for inflation of average America salary has declined just over $4,000 since 1973. As a matter of fact, the ultra wealthy have become wealthier, while the rest of us have become poorer, needing a payday loan just to get by. There won't be a Marxist tangent here, but there is some serious disparity. If Obama is serious about spreading the wealth, he should get to it sooner rather than later. We might not need a payday loan so often if something were done to reign this kind of thing in.
