VW's Fast Making Big Bucks

Posted by: David Kiley on March 17, 2006

Some publicity surrounding these little plastic figuresnow appearing in Volkswagen’s GTI TV ads have made them collector’s items.

Fast figures are selling on for between $350.00 and $1,000 so far. There was stuff in the media saying that VW would only have some 600 of these characters, called your Fast. In reality, each buyer of a GTI this year—some 15,000 maybe—will receive one.

Meantime, those who got early ones—employees, members of the media—have been selling them.

You have to love eBay! The ability to create a true market for objects that some would consider to be worthless junk is truly powerful.

Bought one for my fiance who has a GTI - yes, they talk and they sing the theme to "Fast Times at Ridgemont High.' Seriously, people - its a fun thing, so let it be and let it go.

I drove a 1980 vehicle with an Actual MPG of 71 at 60 statute mph, and 58 Actual MPG in town while racing from red light to red light. The make was Volkswagon. The model was Rabbit. The engine was a diesel. Did the technology go to the scrap yard with the car?

Your 1980 Diesel Rabbit weighed less than 2000 pounds. A new Rabbit is over 3000. That's where the fuel economy went.

My "Fast" arrived today, having bought a GTI last month. I haven't opened it, eBay here I come.
