The fast-food laboratory behind such modern wonders as the taco shell made out of a popular brand of nacho chips is trying to add a new term to the national lexicon. Taco Bell’s (YUM) Quesarito—yes, a burrito inside a quesadilla—became a permanent menu item on Monday.
The company has high hopes for the Quesarito. Based on testing in Oklahoma City this year, it was the best-selling test product since the debut of Doritos Locos Tacos in 2012. Still confused about just what you might be biting into with the Quesarito? Here’s a basic guide:
• It’s about 259g of food measuring roughly 7 inches long, 2.5 inches wide, and 1 inch tall.
• The burrito is filled with rice, chipotle sauce, and reduced-fat sour cream, plus a choice of seasoned ground beef ($1.99), chicken ($2.79) or steak ($2.99). It’s then wrapped up in a grilled quesadilla. A Quesarito is about 650 calories and has at least 30g of fat.
• Look at the gooey, cheesy quesadilla jacket. It’s got more flavor than you’d expect for something with two tortilla layers. Maybe it’s the 1,450mg of sodium. The taste leans more toward burrito than quesadilla.
• It took Taco Bell about a year to develop it. “We looked at a variation that included rice in the quesadilla but removed it because it’s not included in a traditional quesadilla,” says Taco Bell spokesman Rob Poetsch.
