Company News: Apple, Time Warner Cable, Deere, Hasbro, Republic Airways, Supercell, SoftBank

Apple (AAPL) plans to unveil a new set-top TV box as early as April, according to Bloomberg News, and is negotiating with Time Warner Cable (TWC) and others to add video content—a first for the tech giant should a deal materialize. The next-generation Apple TV box will have a faster processor than the earlier version, which sells for $99, and an upgraded interface. The company wants to have the device in stores by the 2014 holiday season.

Deere (DE) estimated its sales in the 2014 fiscal year will slide 3 percent as demand for farm equipment falls. On the plus side, first-quarter net income rose almost 5 percent.

• Hollywood continued to add some shine to the toy business. Although Hasbro (HAS) on Feb. 10 reported disappointing holiday results, its shares surged after the company said it expects brisk business from the upcoming installments of the Transformers and Captain America movie franchises. The Lego Movie, which had one of the strongest box office openings ever for an animated film, should be a boon for sales of Lego’s plastic bricks and figurines.

Republic Airways Holdings (RJET), a regional carrier, said it will ground 27 of its 243 planes because of a pilot shortage. In August, U.S. regulators increased minimum flight experience requirements for commercial pilots. Starting salaries at regional carriers are still around $21,000 a year.

• Supercell, the Finnish company behind the smartphone game Clash of Clans, said sales surged almost ninefold last year, to $892 million. The spoils also go to Japan’s SoftBank (9984:JP), which bought 51 percent of the company in October.
