Interactive Graphic: The Far-Ranging Retail Slump

As long as the economy crawls, so will consumer spending. Some retail sectors fared worse than others: Financially insecure Americans stopped forming households and buying new threads, hurting clothing and furniture retailers. Department stores, already facing years of sluggish growth and customer defections, saw revenues plummet even during the recovery. Cheaper thrills, like food and drink, weren’t punished too badly by the dip. Mouse over different retail sectors to see their yearly sales growth, and remember to never bet against a liquor store.
