Correlations: Summer Movie Sales

Summer, according to Hollywood, lasts from May 1 until Labor Day. For movie studios, the season tends to be high beta—a time of both extreme successes and costly failures. The five highest-grossing movies in the U.S. and Canada last summer accounted for about 41 percent of the entire season’s box office, says Paul Dergarabedian, president of’s Box Office division. That compared with a little less than 30 percent per season for the top five grossers the other two-thirds of the year.
