Stamen Design's Eric Rodenbeck on Leading Creativity

Roger Deckker for Bloomberg Businessweek

We’re applying our data visualization skills to project management. We don’t use the traditional waterfall model, where you have a series of discrete steps. At Stamen the project management looks more like this. Right away you take steps that are going to get you as close to the goal as possible, and you evaluate and you see whether that’s going to work. You keep doing that over and over until you run out of time. You still have the freedom to go back and restate some of your assumptions. And the important part is the questions you’ve discovered along the way.

Rodenbeck is the founder, CEO, and creative director of Stamen Design, an agency that has tackled a variety of mapping and data visualization projects for clients including MTV, the London organizing committee of the Olympic Games, and MSNBC.
