...MOSCOW TUNES IN TO TURNER Closer to the ground, other commercial frontiers also are opening in Russia. As of Jan. 1, ownership of Russia's first independent station, TV-6 in Moscow, passes to Atlanta's Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) and its partner, Moscow Independent Broadcasting. In November, they won the license for Moscow's last available VHF frequency. TV-6 will start out with five hours of evening programming, including TBS's Cable News Network International, cartoons, and movies from the TBS vaults. The plan is to expand to a 24-hour schedule that eventually will include originally produced Russian programs. And yes, comrade, the idea is to generate profits by selling advertising. |
