THE ULTIMATE `OFF' BUTTON IS AT THE FCC

BUSINESS WEEK reports that Mel Karmazin (president of Infinity Broadcasting) "winced...when he recently heard [Howard] Stern say on the air that he prayed that the prostate cancer of FCC Chairman Alfred C. Sikes would spread" ("Howard Stern's boss gets an earful," Media, Dec. 21). But Karmazin, who is Stern's boss, says: "That's why they make on-off buttons."

The Federal Communications Commission also has on-off buttons for broadcasters with no sense of public responsibility or commitment to the public interest. If Karmazin's idea of the public interest is to keep Stern "on," then Karmazin's button should be pushed "off."
