Readers Report

IF HIGH SCHOOL REALLY MATTERED

Alan Blinder's suggestion, in his column "Adam Smith meets Albert Shanker" (Economic Viewpoint, Dec. 14), would do more than all of the education conferences and curriculum reports toward improving the dismal academic results in our high schools. "Suppose every company in the BUSINESS WEEK 1000 routinely asked young applicants for their high school transcripts--and used this information in hiring decisions." This one, low-cost decision would replace rhetoric with action, and within one year, every high school in the country could push the motto "Just say know."
