Indian media are reporting that the government has met with officials from Facebook, Google and other Internet giants and asked them to keep objectionable content off their sites.
Media reports say India's telecommunications minister, Kapil Sibal, asked the companies Monday to prescreen their sites to ensure that no derogatory content related to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi or major religious figures was posted.
One person with knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press that the demand was sparked by a Facebook page about Sonia Gandhi. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.
Spokesmen from Google and Microsoft declined to comment on the meeting.
