THE RESULTS: Delta Air Lines Inc. reported a quarterly profit of $549 million despite fuel prices that were roughly $1 billion higher than last year.
HOW DELTA DID IT: Higher fares. Delta, like other airlines, has been determined to raise fares enough to cover higher costs. It has also begun cutting flying capacity.
WHAT'S NEXT: More capacity cuts. Delta said it will trim fourth-quarter flying by as much as 5 percent, and next year's capacity will fall as much as 3 percent.
