Hawaii has been award more than $7 million in federal grants for renewable energy projects including increasing solar energy and electric vehicles.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie made the announcement Tuesday at the opening of the Asia Pacific Clean Energy Summit and Expo in Honolulu.
The University of Hawaii will get $6.1 million for work to allow the electric grid to take on more solar energy. The state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism will get $750,000 to provide technical assistance to the Public Utilities Commission to help allow for more renewable energy on the grid. And $300,000 goes to UH Maui College toward increasing adoption of electric vehicles in Hawaii.
The summit at the Hawaii Convention Center continues Wednesday.
