Agreement averts NYC parks layoffs

A contract agreement between New York City and its largest municipal union has spared 465 parks department jobs.

The New York Post ( http://nyp.st/nqfTxF) reports that the pact was reached just days before layoff notices were to go out.

Under the agreement, the city can go ahead with a plan to ask a number of full-time parks workers to voluntarily switch to six-month seasonal duties over the next three years. That would save the city about $16 million this fiscal year, enough to avert the layoffs.
