Dozens of Indiana newspaper employees laid off

Dozens of workers at Indiana newspapers have lost their jobs as part of a national round of layoffs at newspaper publisher Gannett Co.

The company that publishes The Indianapolis Star said Tuesday it was laying off 62 employees and eliminating another 19 unfilled positions. The Journal & Courier of Lafayette said it was cutting five positions.

Gannett, the nation's largest newspaper publisher, also owns USA Today and more than 80 other daily U.S. newspapers. The company laid off 700 workers in its latest cutback triggered by an ongoing advertising slump.

The layoffs affected about 2 percent of the company's work force. Gannett would not say how many of the cuts were in the newsroom.
