ICANN approves expansion of Internet domain names

SINGAPORE

The organization that oversees the Internet address system has voted to greatly expand the number of new website suffixes.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers said Monday at a meeting in Singapore that hundreds more suffixes could be created beginning as early as late next year.

The new domains could be categorized by subjects including industry, geography and ethnicity and include Arabic, Chinese and other scripts.
