The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Honolulu is one cent away from beating a record of $4.39 set on July 29, 2008.
According to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge report, Monday's average price in Honolulu is $4.38, up 83 cents from a year ago.
Hawaii's statewide average price is at $4.48, with the most expensive price in Wailuku where the average is a record-breaking $4.86.
Gas in Hawaii continues to be the most expensive in the country, while other states are joining the $4 mark.
As of Monday gas costs more than $4 in Alaska, California, Connecticut, Illinois, New York and the District of Columbia.
The nationwide average price is $3.83.
