Gates, Buffett urge Indian tycoons toward charity

Billionaire philanthropists Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are urging India's tycoons to take up charity and help the hundreds of millions of impoverished people in the country.

It is similar to their mission in China in September, where they had little success in sparking a charitable movement among the country's growing number of tycoons.

India may yield more charitable results, as corporate foundations already have become commonplace in the country.

The Edelman public relations firm says the two Americans are having a closed-door meeting with the Billionaire's Club of India on Thursday, but did not release any details of who is attending.

Forbes has counted 65 billionaires in India this year -- the vast majority of them first-generation tycoons.
