American Express Co. is partnering with Foursquare to link cardholders with stores that offer discounts through the location-based social networking website.
The deal helps American Express by showing customers more ways to run up charges on their credit cards. Foursquare gets a way to try and increase loyalty to its service. Foursquare's service allows its millions of users to use their smartphones to "check in" at their favorite restaurants or bars or retailers and advertise that to friends.
An American Express executive told the Wall Street Journal, which earlier reported the partnership, that the company is following its customers into the social networking world.
American Express customers can register their card numbers with Foursquare to get access to special deals the merchants are offering. A test of the service will start next week in Texas at a conference for technology startups.
