Ga. gov: Disappointed in federal funds for port

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says he's disappointed that President Barack Obama's proposed budget didn't contain more federal money to deepen the shipping channel to Savannah's port.

Obama's budget released Monday proposed $600,000 for preconstruction work on the Savannah project. That's far short of the $105 million Georgia port officials want in hopes that dredging might begin next year.

Deal said the state "obviously hoped for a much greater show of support from the president." But he said the fact that the president included the money to complete the application process means he supports the project moving forward.

Deal's own budget has proposed $32 million in bonding for the port, which is racing to deepen its harbor to allow supersize cargo ships expected to use an expanded Panama Canal.
