France makes high food prices priority of G20

France is enlisting U.N. agencies, international financial institutions and key G20 members to back its efforts to better regulate agricultural markets and make them more transparent in a bid to prevent food crises.

France's agriculture minister, Bruno Le Maire, met with the heads of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency and World Food Program on Friday, a day after FAO reported that world food prices had reached a historic peak.

France holds the Group of Eight and Group of 20 presidencies this year and has made battling high food prices a priority.

WFP warned Friday that the skyrocketing prices were fueling instability and protest; they have been among the triggers for protest in Egypt, Tunisia and elsewhere.
