Honda Motor Co.'s Fit subcompact beat Toyota's Prius hybrid last month to top Japan's auto sales model rankings -- its first return to that spot in nearly two years.
Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp.'s Prius, the world's top-selling gas-electric hybrid, had held that spot for 20 months straight, through December.
But it relinquished that spot in January to the Fit, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said Friday.
Fit sales in Japan in January surged nearly 14 percent from a year earlier to 14,873 vehicles, about half of them hybrids, the Tokyo-based maker of the Odyssey minivan, Accord sedan and Asimo robot said.
