Germany's Merkel meets Italy's Berlusconi

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is scheduled to meet with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi and members of his Cabinet amid ongoing worries about the eurozone debt crisis.

Wednesday's summit at the chancellery in Berlin originally was set for last year but had to be postponed when an ash-spewing Icelandic volcano disrupted air travel across Europe.

The German government says European, international and economic questions will be on the agenda.

The 17-nation eurozone is facing speculation that Portugal will soon have to follow Greece and Ireland in seeking a financial rescue.

Italy suffers from low growth and high debt, but so far has escaped becoming embroiled in the debt crisis -- even though it has seen its borrowing costs increase.
