WHAT? Wireless technology company Qualcomm Inc. has agreed to buy Atheros Communications Inc. for $3.2 billion, a deal that would give it the Wi-Fi capability it's been looking for.
WHY WI-FI? With the acquisition, Qualcomm is betting on the on the continuing spread of Wi-Fi-connected gadgets, such as tablet computers, smart phones and even TVs, into every corner of life.
IT'S NOT A FIRST: Chip maker Intel Corp. made a similar acquisition in September, when it agreed to buy the wireless chip business of Germany's Infineon Technologies AG for $1.4 billion.
