Menu labeling program kicks off in Portland, Me.

A Maine restaurant is the first in Portland to post calories under a program that encourages local, non-chain restaurants to put caloric information in their menus.

Mayor Nicholas Mavodones (mah-vuh-DOHN'-ess) was the first patron of Anthony's Italian Kitchen to order Thursday from the new lighter side menu made possible by the city's Smart Meals for ME program.

Under the program, Healthy Portland provides a registered dietitian to analyze menus and create low-calorie options, as well as assist in printing new menus with nutritional information.

In New York, where a local ordinance requires nutritional information to be posted, officials say 82 percent of diners stated that menu labeling affected their food choices.
