The top 25 U.S. newspapers by average weekday and Sunday circulation from April to September. The percentage changes reflect comparisons with the same six-month span last year.

1. The Wall Street Journal -- 2,061,142 weekday (up 1.8 percent); no Sunday edition.

2. USA Today -- 1,830,594 weekday (down 3.7 percent); no Sunday edition.

3. The New York Times -- 876,638 weekday (down 5.5 percent); 1,352,358 Sunday (down 3.4 percent).

4. Los Angeles Times -- 600,449 weekday (down 8.7 percent); 901,119 Sunday (down 8.4 percent).

5. The Washington Post -- 545,345 weekday (down 6.4 percent); 764,666 Sunday (down 7 percent).

6. Daily News of New York -- 512,520 weekday (down 5.8 percent); 568,266 Sunday (down 5.9 percent).

7. New York Post -- 501,501 weekday (down 1.3 percent); 339,115 Sunday (down 1.2 percent).

8. San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News -- 477,592 weekday; 528,536 Sunday. The most recent circulation figures for the Mercury News do not compare directly with those of the year before because the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek, Calif., and The Oakland Tribune were reclassified as editions of the Mercury News.

9. Chicago Tribune -- 441,508 weekday (down 5.2 percent); 768,073 Sunday (down 4.4 percent).
