Microsoft donates $3M to refugee children

Microsoft Corp. says it will donate $3 million over three years to an organization that provides pro bono legal representation to immigrant and refugee children who arrive in the United States without parents.

Microsoft helped established the organization -- Kids in Need of Defense -- two years ago with a donation of $3 million.

Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, said Monday that the group has helped nearly 2,000 children from 35 countries and is present in seven cities across the U.S.

Smith says the group has seen support outside Microsoft, with dozens of law firms and organization providing services that added up to $7 million last year. Actress Angelina Jolie was also a founding member of the group.

The organization provides lawyers for children to help them navigate immigration court proceedings.
