LINCOLN REVAMP: Ford told Lincoln dealers it wants to revamp the flagging luxury brand by cutting dealerships, making the remaining showrooms more upscale and introducing seven new or redesigned vehicles in the next four years.
WHAT HAPPENED?: Lincoln was the best-selling luxury brand in the U.S. in 1990, but sales dropped because Ford didn't invest in new products.
WHY NOW?: Ford can focus on Lincoln because it has sold its four other luxury brands and is discontinuing Mercury. Dealers have been pressing Ford to give them more Lincoln products to make up for the loss of Mercury.
