American Samoa Gov. Togiola Tulafono has lashed out at StarKist Co. for laying off minimum wage workers in the U.S. territory.
Tulafono criticized the company during his weekend radio program as 380 StarKist cannery workers lost their jobs. About 400 more workers are to be laid off by the end of the year as the company seeks to reduce costs.
The governor has asked the Pittsburgh-based company several times if the cannery has reduced salaries and bonuses of its top senior management officials.
StarKist Samoa general manager Brett Butler told the territory's House Commerce Committee on Thursday that because StarKist is a private company, such details are confidential and can't be released.
