RIO DE JANEIRO
Brazilian officials say one of five penguins rescued from an oil slick has died.
Oil washed up on at least three beaches about 110 miles (180 kilometers) east of Rio de Janeiro over the weekend.
Beachgoers found the penguins on the beaches, contacted authorities, and a government biological agency began to clean and care for the creatures.
A Tuesday statement from the Oswaldo Cruz institute says one of the penguins died. The others seem to be recovering.
Environmental officials are still trying to determine the source of the oil slick, which they believe may have been caused by a passing ship.
State-run oil company Petrobras says it had nothing to do with the slick and that none of its offshore platforms had problems.
