Feds finalize $117M loan for Hawaii wind project
HONOLULU
The U.S. Department of Energy has finalized a $117 million loan guarantee for Kahuku Wind Power LLC, the owner and operator of the Kahuku wind power project on Oahu.
The project includes the development of a 30 megawatt wind power plant designed to supply electricity to about 7,700 households. According to company estimates, the project will create more than 200 jobs.
Energy Secretary Steven Chu said Tuesday in a Washington news release that the project is another example of America's leadership in the global clean energy economy.
Federal officials say the project is expected to be the first to meet reliability requirements for wind and solar energy set by Hawaiian Electric Co.
