Group files 6th oil spill endangered species suit

An environmental group sues Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, saying he didn't properly assess the chance of damage to endangered whales and sea turtles from oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Center for Biological Diversity says the BP PLC spill proves a new analysis is needed.

Oceans director Miyoko Sakashita says the 2007 analysis assumed a worst possible oil spill of 630,000 gallons. That's less than half the amount the government estimates BP's well spewed in one day.

She says it also assumed there was little chance of oil either reaching shore or hurting offshore species such as endangered sea turtles, sperm whales and Gulf sturgeon.

The Tucson, Ariz.-based group has filed five other spill-related suits, plus legal notices that it plans to file two more.
