General Electric to install wind turbines offshore

General Electric Co. said Tuesday it plans to install up to five offshore demonstration wind turbines through partnerships in Norway and Sweden.

The company has signed deals with Norwegian energy companies Statoil and Lyse to together carry out technical and environmental feasibility studies for building an offshore wind demonstration project in Rogaland County, off the southwest coast of Norway. The agreement includes the installation of up to four 4-megawatt offshore, direct-drive wind turbines.

The installation of the wind turbines could start in 2012, based on results of the studies.

GE is also planning an onshore installation of its direct drive machine in 2011. The machine will be erected in Gothenburg Harbor in Sweden in cooperation with Gothenburg Energy.

General Electric earlier this year announced a $450 million expansion of its European offshore wind turbine business.

Shares of GE fell 65 cents, or 4.3 percent, to $14.35 in morning trading.
