Wis. gov: Stimulus funds to help deliver broadband

Gov. Jim Doyle says federal stimulus money will help Wisconsin expand broadband telecommunications services to hundreds of schools and libraries.

Doyle on Monday asked the Legislature's budget committee to approve plans for adding fiber optic connections at schools in 70 districts by the end of 2010 and at libraries in 380 communities by the end of 2011.

The governor says the money will ensure they can meet the need for additional bandwidth and ensure that citizens have equal Internet access "regardless of demographics, geography or economic status."

He says the project will also help businesses, law enforcement agencies and others in the areas where broadband will be installed.
