Macy's chief executive expects the company's new strategy of tailoring merchandise to local markets and its focus on private and exclusive brands to continue boosting its sales.
CEO Terry Lundgren told shareholders at their annual meeting Friday that the rebound of the retailer's upscale Bloomingdale's chain also has helped.
Speaking with reporters afterward, he said he feels good about the factors the retailer can control.
The unemployment rate, the strength of the dollar and tight consumer credit remain concerns, he said.
Lundgren said holiday sales and the fourth quarter in general will be especially important to a successful 2010.
