Research in Motion Ltd., the maker of the Blackberry smartphone, said Monday that it will acquire QNX Software Systems, a unit of Harman International Industries Inc.
Terms of the deal, which is expected to close in just over a month, were not disclosed.
QNX is the developer of an operating system used in automotive, telecommunications and other sectors. Harman, which makes audio and entertainment products for the automotive and other markets, acquired QNX six years ago.
The acquisition would let Research in Motion, QNX and Harman explore possible product and service tie-ups between smartphones and audio and entertainment systems in vehicles.
U.S.-traded shares of Canada-based Research in Motion climbed 30 cents to $70.27 in midday trading. Harman, based in Stamford, Conn., fell 72 cents to $48.46.
