GEORGETOWN, Guyana
Thousands of people in the South American country of Guyana have been affected by a blackout that officials blame on faulty generators.
Guyana Power & Light spokesman Colin Singh says large parts of the capital and coast were left without power.
He says blackouts should diminish by next year as upgrades are made using a $40 million loan from China. He says Chinese engineers will soon begin feasibility studies on building seven substations to help reduce outages in the rice- and sugar-producing southeast region.
Singh says three new generators from Finland will be connected next week.
