How the Dow Jones industrial average did Wednesday

For a third straight day the Standard & Poor's 500 index traded above its record close but failed to hold on to its gains. The Dow Jones industrial average edged higher. An early move higher Wednesday was led by retailers and home builders, but the stock market's gains mostly petered out in the afternoon. By the closing bell the S&P 500 index was up just a fraction of a point.

On Wednesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 18.75 points, or 0.1 percent, to 16,198.41.

The S&P 500 index rose 0.04 point, less than 0.1 percent, to 1,845.16.

The Nasdaq composite rose 4.48 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,292.06.

For the week:

The Dow is up 95.11 points, or 0.6 percent.

The Nasdaq has gained 28.65 points, or 0.7 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is down 378.25 points, or 2.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 3.2 points, or 0.2 percent.
