First-time La. unemployment insurance claims fall

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Feb. 1 decreased from the previous week's total.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission said Friday that initial claims fell to 1,988 from the previous week's total of 2,220. State officials say three days of government closures due to adverse weather may have contributed to the decline. There were 3,126 initial claims during the comparable week in 2013.

The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure of claims, decreased to 2,566 from the previous week's average of 2,630.

Continued unemployment weeks claimed for the week ending Feb. 1 decreased to 22,813 compared to 23,637 the previous week. The four-week moving average for such claims decreased to 23,798 from the previous week's average of 24,206.
