A test of Landrieu's popularity in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Crime and punishment loomed large as voters prepare to select a mayor and other officials in New Orleans.
It's a test of the popularity of incumbent Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who won big over 10 opponents four years ago. On Saturday, he faces two opponents who say he hasn't done enough to stop crime and create jobs.
In another big race, Sheriff Marlin Gusman has three challengers including former Sheriff Charles Foti. Gusman came under criticism last year when an inmate video surfaced showing blatant drug use and the waving of a loaded gun in the jail he runs.
Gusman's and Foti's campaigns have exchanged accusations over which of them was the worse jail administrator.
