Fla. Gov. departs on first trade trip to east Asia

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Rick Scott is heading to Japan on his 10th overseas trip since he took office nearly three years ago.

Scott departs Saturday for a weeklong trip to promote business ties between the Asian country and the Sunshine State. The Florida Chamber of Commerce estimates that 119 Japanese companies employing 20,000 people have operations in the state.

This marks Scott's first trade related trip to east Asia. He has taken previous economic development trips to the South America countries of Brazil, Colombia and Chile as well as Israel, England, France, Spain, Canada and Panama.

The governor is scheduled to visit the cities of Osaka and Tokyo.

Some have questioned the trips, but Scott has defended the trips as a way to open doors for Florida-based companies.
