Ky. coal mine settles racial discrimination suit
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A western Kentucky coal mine accused of discriminating against black job applicants has settled a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
River View Coal, a subsidiary of Tulsa, Okla.-based Alliance Resource Partners, reached an agreement with the commission late last month. The EEOC alleged in the suit that beginning in 2008, River View Coal turned away African-American applicants due to their race.
An attorney for the EEOC says 13 people filed complaints with the agency after being rejected for jobs between 2008 and 2010. They were looking for work at an underground mine in Waverly that employs about 430.
Court records say a judge dismissed the suit on June 3. Details of the settlement were not contained in court records.
