How the Dow Jones industrial average did Friday


Stocks edged higher Friday, capping the worst week for the market in five months.

Shares in Microsoft and Google rose after the tech giants reported stronger earnings.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 10.37 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 14,547.51.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 13.64 points, or 0.9 percent, to 1,555.25.

The Nasdaq composite rose 39.70 points, or 1.3 percent, to 3,206.06.

For the week:

The Dow lost 317.55 points, or 2.1 percent.

The S&P 500 lost 33.60 points, or 2.1 percent.

The Nasdaq lost 88.89 points, or 2.7 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,443.37 points, or 11 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 129.06 points, or 9.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 186.55 points, or 6.2 percent.
