How the Dow Jones industrial average fared

U.S. stocks slipped Wednesday, pushed down by disappointing holiday sales and the looming "fiscal cliff" in Washington.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 24.49, or 0.2 percent, to 13,114.59.

The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 6.83, or 0.5 percent, to 1,419.83.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 22.44, or 0.7 percent, to 2,990.16.

For the week:

The Dow is down 76.25, or 0.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 10.32, or 0.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 30.85, or 1 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 897.03, or 7.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 162.23, or 12.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 385.01, or 14.8 percent.
