How the Dow Jones industrial average fared

U.S. stocks inched higher Thursday even as hopes faded for a pre-Christmas deal on the fiscal cliff.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 59.75 points, or 0.5 percent, to 13,311.72.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 7.88, or 0.6 percent, to 1,443.69.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 6.02, or 0.2 percent, to 3,050.93.

For the week:

The Dow is up 176.71, or 1.4 percent.

The S&P is up 30.11, or 2.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 79.06, or 2.7 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,094.16, or 9 percent.

The S&P is up 186.09, or 14.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 445.24, or 17.1 percent.
