How the Dow Jones industrial average fared Monday

Stocks logged their biggest gain of the month amid signs that a budget deal is taking shape in Washington. Investors are hoping that a deal is reached to avoid a series of sweeping tax increases and government spending cuts at the beginning of next year.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 100.38 points, or 0.8 percent, to 13,235.39.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 16.78 points, 1.2 percent, to 1,430.36.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 39.27 points, or 1.3 percent, to 3,010.60.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,017.83 points, or 8.3 percent.

The S&P is up 172.76 points, or 13.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 405.45 points, or 15.6 percent.
