How the major stock averages fared Wednesday


Stocks rose modestly in quiet pre-holiday trading. Shares got a small lift after the announcement of a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas after a weeklong Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 48.38 points, or 0.4 percent, to 12,836.89.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 3.22 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,391.03.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 9.87 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,926.55.

For the week:

The Dow is up 248.58 points, or 2 percent.

The S&P is up 31.15 points, or 2.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 73.42 points, or 2.6 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 619.33 points, or 5.1 percent.

The S&P is up 133.43 points, or 10.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 321.40 points, or 12.3 percent.
