CRIME AND PUNISHMENT: A former Croatian prime minister got 10 years in prison for bribery, after a trial that was closely monitored by the country's future partners in the European Union.

BIG FISH: Ivo Sanader was prime minister from 2004 to 2009 and is the highest ranking former government official to be tried for corruption in Croatia, which has pledged to root out corruption ahead of joining the EU next July.

BIG BUCKS: Sanader was guilty of accepting a €10 million ($13 million) bribe from a Hungarian oil company and €545,000 in kickbacks for a deal with an Austrian bank.
