Con Edison says power back for nearly 80 percent
NEW YORK (AP) — Consolidated Edison Inc. says power has been restored to nearly 80 percent of its customers who were blacked out in the storm. But efforts to get the rest back on line could be hampered by more wet, windy weather expected to hit the coast Wednesday.
Early forecasts were predicting a chance of rain and wind gusts of up to 50 mph.
The utility still had around 167,000 customers without power early Monday. The toughest work yet to be done was in suburban Westchester County, where nearly 72,000 homes and businesses lacked electricity.
Over 95,000 customers were still out New York City, almost all in suburban or coastal areas served by overhead wires, rather than underground cables.
