Recalls this week: portable generators, light toys


Fire-prone portable generators with fuel leaks, overheating projection lights, and light toys that can become too hot to handle are some of the consumer products recalled this week.

Here's a more detailed look:

PORTABLE GENERATORS

DETAILS: Champion Power Equipment portable generators with model number 41332 and 41532. Serial numbers involved in the recall can be found at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml13/13026.html . They were sold at Costco Wholesale Corp. stores from Dec. 2011 through July 2012.

WHY: Fuel can leak from the generator's carburetor.

INCIDENTS: 11 reports of fuel leaking from the generators, including eight reports of generators catching fire and two reports of property damage.

LIGHT TOYS

DETAILS: Double Dazzler Light Show toys imported by Imagine Nation Books of Louisville, Colo., and made by Transfar of Guangdong, China. They were sold from March through September 2012. The product is a silver, plastic, baton-like toy with white plastic tubes at each end that become multi-colored spinning lights when operated.

WHY: The battery in the toys can overheat and pose a burn hazard.

INCIDENTS: The firm is aware of five incidents of overheating. No injuries or property damage have been reported.

THEATER SPEAKER SYSTEMS

DETAILS: Dual-Voltage CineMate II Home Theater Speaker Systems distributed by Bose Corp. of Framingham, Mass. They were sold from Sept. 2009 through Sept. 2012. The dual-voltage CineMate Series II and CineMate GS Series II digital home theater speaker systems were designed to operate with U.S. 120-volt electrical outlets and European outlets of 220 volts or higher. Each speaker system includes two speakers, one bass module, a remote control device, an interface module and accessories. The components are black.

WHY: A component in the bass module can fail when used outside of the U.S. in electrical outlets rated at 220 volts or higher, presenting a fire hazard to consumers.

INCIDENTS: Two reports of the bass modules igniting when used in 220-volt electrical outlets in Europe. No injuries reported.

HOW MANY: About 20,500.

PROJECTION LIGHTS

DETAILS: Halloween Mini Projection Lights distributed by Atico International USA Inc. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. They were sold exclusively at Five Below stores nationwide during September 2012. The plastic Halloween mini projection lights are about 6 inches long and have Halloween-themed black designs on them. They were sold in orange, green and purple.

WHY: The mini projection lights can overheat and melt, posing a burn hazard to consumers.

INCIDENTS: Two reports of incidents, including one minor burn injury.

HOW MANY: About 3,000.

LAWN MOWERS

DETAILS: Hustler and BigDog riding and walking lawn mowers sold between Sept. 2010 and May 2012. The names and serial numbers can be found at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml13/13704.html .

WHY: The fuel tank vent valve fitting can fail to seal and cause a fuel leak.

INCIDENTS: 152 incidents of the vent valve fittings failing, but no reports of injuries or property damage.
